The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a phablet produced by Samsung Electronics that runs Android 4.3 JellyBean or 4.4 KitKat. It was released on September 25, 2013 for the launch price of 749€ and is the successor of the Galaxy Note 2. It is available in a 32GB version or a 64GB one.

A phablet is a hybrid of a smartphone and a tablet. It is a mobile device that combines the functions of both. It is larger than a smartphone and smaller than a tablet. The touch screen size varies from 5 to 6 inches.

Let’s start with its physical features as well as its general appearance :

The phone is only 8.3mm thick. It is surrounded with a metal frame which makes it look more robust. The physical home key is also surrounded by a silver frame. All Around the home key button there are capacitive controls that light up when you touch them.

The back panel is removable so you can access the microSD slot for extra storage capacity as well as the 3,200 mAh battery which has a long running life, thus allowing you to browse the web, watch videos or play games for up to 11 hours.

The back panel is made from polycarbonate plastic and has the appearance and the texture of leather, which gives the phablet a good grip. The power button and the volume rocker are towards the top on the left and right sides of the device. On the top, you can find a 3.5mm headphone jack and at the bottom there is a microUSB and MHL port and a special stylus designed for the Note 3, the S pen.

The Galaxy Note 3 has an impressive and sharp 5.7-inch full HD 1080x1920 resolution display with intense brightness and spectacular contrast. It makes it ideal for watching videos or movies and browsing the web. The Note 3 is compatible with 2G, 3G and 4G LTE. It also has WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC (Near Field Communication) and DLNA.

What makes the Galaxy Note 3 so expensive are its components. This phablet uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU clocked at 2.3GHz and is paired with 3GB of RAM. It is actually one of the fastest Android mobile devices on the market. The 3GB of RAM helps you to perform multitasks efficiently. You can run 2 apps at the same time without any issues.

As for the camera, it is a 13-megapixel camera with both 4k and 1080p video capture. It is backside illuminated, has a LED flash and includes digital image stabilisation. The camera includes a lot of different modes such as Panorama, Animated Photo to create GIF, Eraser to delete moving objects, Best face which allows you to select the best shot in group photos, Rich Tone (HDR/High Dynamic Range) to get better-looking photos, Drama Shot to capture the movement of a subject in one picture. It is an excellent camera that can satisfy most of the users, but it is nowhere near the camera of the Nokia Lumia 1020 or Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

The Note 3 features a great many functions. Here are some examples :

  • Multiscreen is a feature which allows you to split your screen to use several applications at the same time. The wide display paired with the powerful processor and the 3GB of RAM makes the Note 3 very effective in Multiscreen mode. It is very fluid and smooth.
  • Air Command is an S pen-enabled command that brings up a menu with access to many functions such as Pen Window, which allows you to draw boxes to split your screen into several boxes. There is also S Finder, a search function which makes it possible to search missing files or to access them faster.

Overall the Note 3 is one of the best phablets available on the market. It is very fluid. It has great performances, a great battery life, a good camera, an incredible display and interesting features. It is really worth the cost if you enjoy phablets and multitasking.
